The Course

How long does it take to train in MHFA?

The course is delivered over 12 hours, usually spread over two days.

Can anyone attend training?

Yes, anyone can attend an MHFA training session. There are no selection criteria and the course is aimed at ordinary people, not health professionals.

The English MHFA scheme is based on the Scottish programme, and has been developed by NIMHE, the National Institute for Mental Health in England, in consultation with MIND (the National Association for Mental Health), and Health Scotland. NIMHE has recently become the National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU). Recently the whole scheme has come under the wing of a new Community Interest Company, MHFA England.

The English regional Care Services Improvement Partnerships (CSIP), funded by the Department of Health,  piloted the scheme in selected regions, and started training and accrediting MHFA trainers in 2007.  Bill Cunningham was one of the first cohort of trainers to be approved in England.  As an official MHFA trainer Bill uses resources and materials supplied by MHFA England, and trainees who complete the course successfully receive a course manual and a certificate issued and accredited by MHFA England.

Where does training take place?

Courses of up to 15 participants can be arranged in-house if an organisation has suitable facilities. Smaller groups or individuals wishing to train can contact Bill Cunningham for more details at info@mentalhealthfirstaidnortheast.co.uk or on 01325 722772.

Details of the benefits the Mental Health First Aid course can offer in the workplace can be found here

Please be advised that given the nature of this training some participants may find elements of the course emotionally challenging and distressing
