Mental Health First Aid has its origins in Australia in 2000 where it was the brainchild of Betty Kitchener and Prof Antony Jorm. Since then it has spread to 15 countries worldwide.
MHFA landed on British shores as Scotlands Mental Health First Aid in 2004 and filtered into England in 2007 as a result of work done by the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP) and the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) before being taken over by the MHFA England CIC last year.
Bill Cunningham qualified as one of the first cohort of English MHFA instuctors trained in 2007. Since then he has delivered the course extensively throughout England and has been a member of the MHFA National Training Team since 2009.
You can read an article about MHFA that Bill wrote for the APHP Journal in 2008 here
